Shipwreck showed Cardi generosity

Ceredigion residents are stereotyped as misers, but when a collection was held in Aberystwyth in 1861 for the ...

local people who rescued the crew of the schooner Aquila the tally came to well over £23. The money was distributed to the rescuers including a Mrs Rees, who had gone into the sea to save a man after one of the rescue boats capsized. The incident led to the formation of the RNLI's Aberystwyth branch. The RNLI keeps a lifeboat there to this day. To read the story of this heroic rescue, scan the QR codes on the prom, near the pier.
