Neath's unpopular policeman

The appointment of Neath's first policeman didn't go down well with the locals - who eventually dangled him over a bridge parapet until he promised to leave ...

them alone. He'd taken up the post less than two years earlier, in 1836. It was said that the policeman, David Protheroe, left his wife in charge when he was away from Neath - and she was better at policing. The JD Wetherspoon pub in Neath is named after him, as it's in the former police station which closed in 1996. For more about the building and the policeman, scan the QR codes on the door of the pub.
