French privateers who cried 'Loup!'


The cannons outside Holyhead Maritime Museum were dumped overboard in 1710 by French privateers, who had kidnapped customs officers by ...

pretending that their ship was British and in distress. While the crew awaited their ransom payment, a storm drove their ship towards the rocks. They fired distress signals again, but - funnily enough - this time nobody responded.
