Suffragettes in Newport


Having being the scene of the tragic but ultimately successful Charist protest in 1839, Newport was an obvious place for suffragettes to seek support in ...

the early 20th century. In 1908, a large crowd assembled outside the Queen's Hotel to listen to speeches by two suffragettes who were later imprisoned for being part of a deputation to the Prime Minister in London. Newport's own Margaret Haig Mackworth - the future Viscountess Rhondda - was subsequently jailed for her contribution to the campaign for women to be given the vote.
