A lifetime of transformation

Conwy sea captain John Jones, who died 150 years ago this month, witnessed his town's transformation during his 70 years. He was landlord of the Liverpool Arms ...

while also captain of a ship that plied between Conwy and Liverpool, hence the pub's name. He saw Thomas Telford's workforce erect the Cob and suspension bridge in the 1820s to create a fixed link over the estuary, followed by construction of Conwy quay. The arrival of the railway in the 1840s changed the town again, but he adapted to become station master at Colwyn Bay.
