Wreck survivor's cannibalism charge

A sailor from Moelfre, Anglesey, was lucky to be picked up alive by a passing ship after nine days in a lifeboat, but later he was tried for cannibalism. His own ship ...

had been bound for New Zealand with more than 400 emigrants when it caught fire and sank off South Africa. Only five survivors were picked up from the lifeboat, including Thomas Lewis of Moelfre. Two of the survivors soon died. The others were later put on trial after one of them let slip that they had resorted to eating part of a human corpse to fend off starvation.
