Remembering the flannel factory flood

When a dam broke at Cwmcarn, in the Gwent Valleys, in 1875 the resulting torrent was powerful enough to demolish the flannel factory where John Hunt and his family ...

were sleeping. Some employees also lived on the premises. Mr Hunt, badly injured, was later found downstream because his dog had stayed with him and was barking for attention. He soon died of his injuries. Five other members of his family had also been killed, along with six other people. Now, 140 years later, HistoryPoints QR codes have been installed near the memorial bench for the dam disaster victims. The codes are on display where the footpath along the former canal leaves Twyncarn Road, and enable the public to read our web page about the disaster and the victims on their smartphones.
