closest friends, Hester Lynch Thrale, lived in Tremeirchion, in the Vale of Clwyd. She is commemorated on a plaque in the church and is best known today for her book of anecdotes about the great writer and pioneering lexicographer. The church is now in better shape than it was when he visited, and the churchyard boasts a remarkable 14th century cross which was discovered under a yew tree long after Dr Johnson's visit.
