Carew's astute miller

"Too good to be true," thought Thomas Ford of Carew tidal mill on receiving a free sample of "Improving Meal" in 1891. The company which had sent it claimed the substance ...

would improve his flour's colour. He sent the powder to a London laboratory which reported that it was gypsum - as used today to make plasterboard! The mill, situated between Tenby and Pembroke, closed in the 1930s but is now the best-preserved tidal mill in Wales. Inside visitors can see how energy from the falling tide was harnessed to drive the millstones. For more on the mill's history, scan the HistoryPoints QR codes outside the building. Or click here
