Pwllheli captain's family separation

Ship's captain Thomas Pritchard only got to see his children twice, in 1929 and 1935, before being taken to a
Japanese prisoner of war camp where he died ...

in 1944. During the economic depression of the inter-war years he had moved to Hong Kong for work, while his family remained at home in Wales. He had served on warships in the First World War but when war broke out in Hong Kong he commanded a civilian ship, which was sunk by the enemy. To read his story and see a photo of him, click here.
With the help of the Merchant Navy Association (Wales), we have also updated our details of Merchant Navy and Mercantile Marine sailors from Pwllheli who died in the world wars - including many who aren't named on the town's war memorial.
