Flying drones in the 1940s

Drones, or unmanned aerial vehicles, seem to be everywhere these days but their history on Anglesey goes back to the early 1940s, when biplanes known as "Queen Bees" were ...

flown from the new RAF Aberffraw airfield. They were meant to be targets for artillery practice but some Queen Bees had other ideas, flying away over the sea or into Snowdonia. The airfield later became RAF Bodorgan but the area has long since reverted to agriculture. For more about the airfield and where to see its surviving hangars, scan the HistoryPoints QR codes on the Wales Coast Path sign at the Hermon crossroads. Or click here
