Waiting a century for toll abolition

In 1909 an official request was made for abolition of the Pont Briwet toll near Penrhyndeudraeth. The unpopular charge for road users was scrapped - 104 years later! The bridge ...

carries the scenic Cambrian Coast railway and is important for road users because it cuts out a long detour - as a local poet celebrated in verse when the bridge opened in 1867. The bridge reopened after rebuilding in 2015 and now carries the Wales Coast Path over the Dwyryd estuary. For more about the bridge's history, and to read the verse, use your mobile to scan the HistoryPoints QR codes below the roadside interpretation board near the north end of the bridge. Or click here
