Newtown's mail order pioneer

Long before e-commerce, Newtown flannel maker Pryce Jones realised that the town's new connection to the national rail network enabled him to advertise ...

goods for sale direct from the manufacturer, with rapid delivery to customers (who soon included Queen Victoria in Windsor or on the Isle of Wight). And so began the world's first mail-order business. It's no coincidence that his imposing Royal Welsh Warehouse stands beside the railway station. For more about the station's history - including the disappointment when the royal train hurried through in 1896 - scan the HistoryPoints QR codes at the station. Or click here
