Barmaid tried for Valentine libel

A young Pwllheli barmaid was tried at the Assizes - equivalent to today's Crown Court - in 1890 for sending libellous Valentine's letters. A master mariner was called a "dry land captain" in ...

the letters, which also accused him of killing his wives. Other details in the letters couldn't have been penned by the 22-year-old Whitehall Hotel barmaid unless she had the "filthiest desires", it was said at the time.
