Temperance coffee still available

A charity shop in Crickhowell, Powys, still makes coffee available to any "weary traveller" in need of refreshment because it occupies a former temperance house. The Queen Coffee Tavern ...

was built in 1884 by Percy and Caroline Wilhelmina Davies, who had moved to Crickhowell and wanted the town to have a socialising venue which didn't tempt customers to drink alcohol. They bequeathed the building to the town, with a stipulation that coffee be available there forever. The Percy Davies Trust still gives charitable grants to local good causes. For more about the couple and the building - including its long history as a library - scan the QR codes in the window of the British Red Cross shop. Or click here
