Dyffryn Ardudwy war memorial

This memorial, featuring a stone Celtic cross, commemorates local men who died in the First and Second World Wars. To read their details, please use the link below.

Inscribed below the FWW names are words by the poet R Williams Parry, from his ode in memory of Hedd Wyn (a bard killed in the FWW): Garw fu rhoi’i bridd i’r briddell, Mwyaf garw oedd marw ymhell. This translates as: “It was harsh that his body was given to the earth, the harshest thing was dying far away.”

Our list of local war dead includes Keith Cyril Lanman, who is not named on the memorial. His parents lived in Dyffryn Ardudwy. His ship, SS Aracataca, was carrying fruit across the Atlantic to Britain in November 1940 when it was sunk by a German submarine west of Ireland. All of the crew got into the ship’s lifeboats. Some were eventually rescued but two of the lifeboats – including Keith’s – were never seen again.
