Radyr war memorial

This memorial is dedicated to the people of the parish who died in the First and Second World Wars and to the 147 other residents who served in the FWW and returned. To read details of the fallen, choose a category below.

On the memorial’s pedestal stands a sculpted woman holding up a torch, with a wreath in her other hand. Below is depicted of an angelic child. The sculptor was Alfred Turner (1874-1940), who also created the marble statue of Owain Glyndŵr in City Hall, Cardiff.

Several of the men named on the memorial are buried outside Radyr parish church, in Danescourt.

  • Arthur Brownlow Beeson, Driver T4/044531, Army Service Corps, Horse Transport attd. 1st/2nd (North Midland) Heavy Bty Royal Garrison Artillery. Died 01/11/1918, aged 41. St Sever Cemetery Extension. Husband of Ellen Jane Beeson, of 12, Gelynis Terrace, Morganstown, Taffs Well. Not named on Radyr war memorial.
  • Raymond Bird, 2nd Lieutenant, Gloucestershire Regiment, 4th (City of Bristol) Battalion. Died 16/08/1916, aged 25. Buried at Pozieres British Cemetery. Son of Frederick Graham Bird and Alice Bird, of "Merton", Radyr; husband of Alice Muriel Stevens Bird, of "Ambleside", 5 Lake Road West, Cardiff. Worked as a clerk to a chemical manufacturer before the war.
  • George Breach, Private 39123, South Wales Borderers, 1st Battalion. Died 20/12/ 1916. Son of engine driver George Breach and Alice Breach, who in 1911 lived at 24 Coburn Street, Cardiff. Not named on Radyr war memorial.
  • Alec Davies, Private 3559, Welsh Guards, 1st Battalion. Died of wounds 02/08/1918, aged 20. St Hilaire Cemetery Extension, Frevent. Born in Machen, Monmouthshire. Only son of John and Mary Davies of "Ty Isaf", Quarry Rd., Llandaff.
  • Richard Ivor Dew, Private 244945, The Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, 2nd/5th Battalion. Died 26/10/1917, aged 30. Tyne Cot Memorial. Son of William and Sarah Dew.
  • Henry 'Harry' Bruges Fisher, Lieutenant Colonel, Wiltshire Regiment, serving as Commanding Officer, York and Lancaster Regiment, 12th (Sheffield City) Battalion. Died 3 October 1916, aged 38. Le Touret Military Cemetery. Son of Col. Fisher and Mrs Fisher, of Ty Mynydd, Radyr. Husband of Annabella Sybil Fisher (nee Dansey), of the Manor House, Richards Castle, Ludlow. Had joined the army in 1899 and fought in the South African War, winning the Queen Victoria Medal with four clasps. Brother of Herbert, below. Two other brothers, Oakden and Philip, also served.
  • Herbert George Fisher, Lieutenant Colonel, Royal Field Artillery. Died 29/07/1919, aged 40. Awarded DSO and Bar. Radyr (St John The Baptist) Old Churchyard. Son of Henry Oaken Fisher and Helen Agnes Fisher of Radyr; brother of Lt. Col. Harry Bruges Fisher. Not named on Radyr war memorial.
  • Robert Fordham. Possibly: Robert Henry Fordham, Private 3657, 13th Hussars attchd 2nd Life Guards. Died at home 03/03/1915, aged 27. Cardiff (Cathays) Cemetery. Son of Robert and Jane Fordham of Ilfracombe, Devon; husband of Edith Ellen Fordham, of Brynderwen Cottage, Rhiwbina.
  • Henry Charles Gainey, Second Lieutenant, Devon Regiment, 8th Battalion. Died 14/07/1916, aged 27. Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz. Son of Samuel Augustus Gainey and Margaret Gainey, of the Old Post Inn, Bonvilston. The family had lived for many years at 20, Junction Terrace, Radyr. Henry was a golf professional at Pentre before the war.
  • Harry Goodacre, Private No. 56925, Welsh Regiment, 13th (2nd Rhondda) (Service) Battalion. Died of wounds 19/05/1918, aged 23. Buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. Son of William Robert and Margaret Goodacre, of "Garth View", Morganstown, Radyr. Born in Tongwynlais.
  • George Perry Hall, Serjeant WR/502200, Royal Engineers, Inland Water Transport. Died of emphysema 30/01/1919 at Napsbury War Hospital, St Albans. Buried at Radyr (St John the Baptist) Old Churchyard. Son of engine driver James Hall and Sarah Ann Hall. George was an engine fitter for the Taff Vale Railway before the war, living with his parents at "Melrose", Radyr.
  • William H Heddon, Welsh Regt, 21st Reserve Bn, and 16th Cardiff City Battalion.Discharged from the army with pulmonary tuberculosis. Died in 1917, aged 19 or 20.
  • Walter Lloyd Jenkins, Private 34940, Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment), 4th Battalion. Previously served as Private 1584, Welsh Regiment. Born in Canton, Cardiff. Died at home in Radyr on 1 March 01/03/1919, aged 25. Buried at Radyr (St. John The Baptist) Old Churchyard. Son of John Lloyd Jenkins and Matilda Jenkins, of Brynhyfryd, Radyr.
  • Edgar Jones, Third Engineer Merchant Navy – SS Ingleside (Whitby). Died 08/05/1918. Tower Hill Memorial. Son of John and Mary Jones (nee Kenwood), of the Ty Nant Inn, Taffs Well, Cardiff. Born in Cardiff. His ship was torpedoed off Algiers by a German submarine on 8 May 1918 while travelling from La Goulette to Barrow with a cargo of iron ore.
  • William Knox, Second Lieutenant, Royal Flying Corps 54th Squadron. Died 24/03/1918. Commemorated on the Arras Flying Services Memorial. Son of Prof George and Agnes Knox, of Heol Isaf, Radyr. William’s Sopwith Camel was shot down – possibly by the “Red Baron” – near Peronne.
  • Trevor Edward Lewis, Captain, South Wales Borderers, 5th Battalion. Died 28/08/1915. Buried at Merville Communal Cemetery. Son of Mr & Mrs Henry Lewis, of 13, Camden Crescent, Bath. Native of Tynant, Taff's Well, Cardiff. Worked as a mining engineer before the war.
  • Victor William Valette Lowrie, Lieutenant, Royal Flying Corps and Royal Air Force. Killed 27/04/1918, aged 18, in a flying training accident. Son of Alfred Herbert and Marguerite Lowrie of "Lynwood", Radyr. Buried at Radyr (St John the Baptist) Old Churchyard.
  • Francis Matthew Mabbitt, Sergeant 5388, Australian Infantry 26th (Infantry) Battalion. Died 03/10/1918, aged 34. Buried at Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gouy, France. Son of George and Emma Mabbitt of 'Holmlea', 7 Junction Terrace, Radyr. Husband of Elsie Maud Mabbitt, of Greaves St., Inverell, New South Wales. Brother of Douglas, below.
  • Douglas Terry Mabbit, Private 824, Welsh Guards 1st Battalion. Died 10/09/ 1916. Thiepval Memorial. Son of George and Emma Mabbitt of 'Holmlea', 7 Junction Terrace, Radyr.
  • Robert John Ponsford, Private 57236, Welsh Regiment, 13th (2nd Rhondda) Battalion. Died 31/07/1917. Enlisted in Cardiff. Resident of Radyr.
  • Douglas Parker Robathan (incorrectly named on Radyr war memorial as Douglais), Captain, Welsh Regiment, 5th (Territorial Force) Battalion. Died 10/08/1915, aged 27. Killed in action at Gallipoli. Commemorated on Helles Memorial, Greece. Born at Risca. Son of surgeon George Beckett Robathan and Francis Elizabeth Muirhead, nee Paull. Was a mining student before the war, living in a house called “Summerlands” and later at “Ovid House”.
  • Jones Arthur Trevor, Captain, Welsh Regiment, 17th Battalion. Died of wounds 19/06/1917, aged 25. Fins New British Cemetery. Son of William Watkin Jones and Louisa Ann Jones. Native of Cardiff. Educated at Tonbridge School (Judde House).
  • William Thomas, Private 1477. Died 13/08/1915, aged 22. Royal Army Medical Corps, 2nd (Welsh) Field Ambulance. Hill 10 Cemetery. Son of John and Anne Thomas, of 56, Thesiger St., Cathays. Born at Radyr. Not named on Radyr war memorial.
  • Oliver Watkins, Private 121326, Royal Engineers, 87th Field Company. Served in Franche in 1916 before being invalided out, aged 45. Died in Cardiff in 1917. Not commemorated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Lived at 3 Main Rd., Morganstown, before the war. Born in Nailsea, Somerset. Married Ellenor Powell in Radyr Parish Church in 1892.

  • Philip Maxwell Bogod, Captain 166641. Died 19/05/1943, aged 22. Royal Artillery attd. 658 AOP Sqdn. Royal Air Force. Cardiff Jewish Cemetery. Son of Wilfred Morris Bogod and Fanny Bogod, of Radyr.
  • William Frederick Gerrard Hughes, Sergeant, Pilot 1272205. Died 26/04/1942, aged 29. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Harwell Cemetery. Son of Frederick and Agnes Hughes, husband of Pansy Lorraine Hughes, of Radyr.
  • Victor John Lewis, Sapper 1981943. Died 09/02/1943, aged 43. Royal Engineers. Radyr (St. John The Baptist) Old Churchyard. Son of John and Gertrude Lewis; husband of Lilian Doreen Lewis, of Radyr.
  • Owen Kenrick Morgan, Civilian. Died 24/01/1941, aged 44. Injured 18 January 1941, at Rutland Road, Skegness; died at Cottage Hospital. Son of Owen Thomas and Florence Jane Morgan, of "Castleton", Radyr; husband of Dorothy Dane Morgan, of Cartref, Sunningdale Drive.
  • Frederick William Donald Perry, Lieutenant, 9th Jat Regiment. Died 11/02/1942, aged 26. Singapore Memorial. Son of Mr and Mrs FA Perry, of Radyr.
  • William Charles Samuel, Pilot Officer 121053. Died 25/06/1942, aged 22. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve 49 Sqdn. Awarded Distinguished Flying Medal. Runnymede Memorial. Son of Octavius William and Irene Gwyneth Samuel, of Morganstown, Cardiff.
  • Herbert George Drew Thomas, Supply Assistant D/MX71670. Died 04/03/1942, aged 29. Royal Navy – HMS Anking. Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Mr and Mrs Daniel Thomas; husband of Gwendoline Audrey A Thomas, of Radyr. HMS Anking was sunk by Japanese forces while travelling from Indonesia to Australia.
  • William James Lancelot Wakelin, Master. Died 17/03/1942, aged 50. Merchant Navy - SS Antilope (London). Pontypridd Crematorium. Son of James A Wakelin and Caroline Mary Wakelin; husband of Constance Wakelin, of Radyr.
