War graves in Talgarth churchyard

PWMP logobutton_lang_welshWar graves in Talgarth churchyard

In the churchyard of St Gwendoline’s Church are seven Commonwealth war graves, five of which relate to the First World War. See below for details of the people buried in the war graves.

Unusually, a brother and sister are buried in two of the war graves. Daphne Elizabeth Powell joined Queen Mary’s Army Auxiliary Corps in November 1917 and worked at a military hospital in Swanage, Dorset. She died at her parents’ home, the Old Vicarage in Talgarth, in April 1919, following a brief illness. She was 21 years old.

Her brother Charles was unable to attend her funeral because he was in Germany. He was still serving in the South Wales Borderers, although the war had ended. He died at Beechwood House Hospital in Newport in February, also aged 21, in February 1921 and is buried near his sister.

Percy Davies, also buried here, died in May 1921 after serving in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was the second son of Talgarth’s long-serving schoolmaster WT Davies and worked as a house surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital, London, before joining the army.

One of the Second World War graves is that of George Henry Tanswell. He was a member of the Home Guard, a part-time volunteer force trained to protect Britain and respond to emergencies during the war.

The churchyard is now in the care of Talgarth Town Council.
