Llanberis war memorial

Link to Welsh translation

This war memorial was unveiled in 1921 to commemorate the local people who had died in the First World War. The names of those who died in later conflicts were added to the memorial subsequently. To discover who they were, choose a category below.

First World War

Second World War

Falklands conflict

We have included details of men who had connections to Llanberis but aren’t named on the war memorial.

Among those named on the memorial is Jennie Williams, of Plas Coch. She was a nurse in France for almost three years before she died of pneumonia at the military hospital in which she had worked.

Many of the men who died were quarrymen. Some were surplus to requirements at Dinorwig slate quarry, which had reduced its working week to four days by November 1914 in response to a slump in demand for roofing slates. Some quarrymen were compelled to join the armed forces after conscription began in 1916.
