Tremeirchion viewpoint

From the Offa’s Dyke Path and the North Wales Pilgrim's Way above Tremeirchion you can enjoy sweeping views over the Vale of Clwyd. On a clear day, the mountains of northern Snowdonia are visible in the distance. The photos below should help you to locate landmarks.

Down the slope to the west from here is St Beuno’s Jesuit Spirituality Centre. The great Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins lived there from 1874 to 1877 while studying to become a priest. He produced some of his finest poetry while at St Beuno’s. He also learned Welsh, read poetry in the language and even composed a poem in Welsh. He was fascinated by the alliterative system of cynghanedd, where consonants are repeated in certain patterns, and adapted the principles for his English-language poetry.

St Beuno’s was founded in 1848. Its first rector founded a Catholic mission in Rhyl, also in St Asaph and Denbigh.

Landmarks you can see from here in the Vale of Clwyd include St Asaph Cathedral (click on the name to read the HistoryPoints page about the cathedral) and the tall spire of the Marble Church in Bodelwyddan. The distant headland is the Little Orme, or Rhiwledyn.
