Beddgelert war memorial

beddgelertBeddgelert war memorial

This memorial commemorates men from Beddgelert and the surrounding area who died in the First and Second World Wars and the Boer War. You can find their details below.

Henry Owen and Harry Owen are both named on the war memorial. They died on the same day in 1917 in the Battle of Gaza. Both are buried in Gaza War Cemetery.

Two others, Griffith Griffiths and William Edward Roberts, both died of pneumonia at a military camp in Oswestry with a week of each other in 1917. Both are buried near St Mary’s Church, Beddgelert.

The First World War caused a rift in the community between families with relatives in the armed forces and families which successfully appealed against conscription. In February 1916, 36 relatives of men in service signed a petition to the Glaslyn military tribunal (which adjudicated on exemption appeals). They protested in “the strongest possible terms against the wholesale exemptions and postponements” for young men whose work could be done by older men. They also claimed that many farmers’ sons had been excused despite not being essential workers.

The signatories included William Roberts, chairman of Beddgelert Parish Council. His son Rhys had been killed in France in the previous month. Several others were related to men who had been invalided home from the Front or taken prisoner of war.
