  • Peter John Henry Avant, Boy Bugler, PO/X 4689, 23/05/1941, age 14. Royal Marines, HMS Fiji. MemorialPortsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of Lily Ruth Avant, of Colwyn Bay. Not named on Colwyn Bay war memorial. He was possibly the youngest British serviceman to die in action in the Second World War. HMS Fiji was attacked by enemy bombers off Crete. A survivor later recalled talking on the ship with Peter, who had had a troubled upbringing and been abandoned by his mother. He had also spoken to Peter in the sea after their ship was sunk, shortly before Peter, in despair, let the air out of his lifebelt and disappeared beneath the waves.

He had worked as a gardener for Miss Newton of Eithinog, Upper Colwyn Bay, and also for WH Smith and window cleaner S Lawton.

Son of Thomas and Raymonde Foster, of La Mailleraye, Llandudno Road, Rhos-on-Sea. One of 110 who died when his frigate was torpedoed off The Lizard, Cornwall, while deployed on a screening operation in support of the D-Day landings. Former member of 2nd Colwyn Bay Scout Group.
  • Geoffrey Foulkes, Cadet, died 04/09/1943, age 17. Air Training Corps. Buried at Llandrillo-yn-Rhos (St Trillo) Churchyard. Son of Samuel and Anne Jane Foulkes, of Manchester House, Conway Road, Colwyn Bay. Was a Scout in Colwyn Bay. While spending a week at an RAF station, he and another cadet were passengers in an aircraft, to gain flight experience, when the plane crashed. He had already attested to join the Fleet Air Arm when he was old enough.

He had a brother serving in the Palestine Police. The light cruiser HMS Hermione was torpedoed by a Nazi U-boat, with the loss of 87 crew members, while returning to Alexandria after escorting a convoy to Malta.
