His ship was sunk by German submarine U-415 while travelling from Liverpool via Belfast Lough to New York in ballast and carrying mail. Not named on Bangor war memorial.

  • Hugh Evan Emrys Owen, Lamp Trimmer. Died 11/01/1945 aged 39. Merchant Navy - SS Normandy Coast (Liverpool). Tower Hill Memorial. Born in Bangor. Last abode: Hafod Terrace, Caernarfon. One of 19 men lost in the Irish Sea west of Anglesey when their ship was torpedoed, sinking within two minutes. Eight survivors were picked up by the British patrol ship HMS PC-74 and landed at Holyhead. Not named on Bangor war memorial.

  • Robert Owen, Fireman. Died of pneumonia as prisoner of war near Tokyo on 23/12/1943 aged 47. Merchant Navy - SS Aust. Buried at Yokohama British Commonwealth War Cemetery, Japan. Born in Bangor. Son of Owen Owen, of Bangor. The Norwegian ship SS Aust was intercepted by a German raider and sunk in the South Atlantic. All crew were taken prisoner. Not named on Bangor war memorial.

One of 46 men lost when the ship was torpedoed and sunk off Cape Farewell, Greenland. The merchant ship Empire Impala was ordered to pick up the survivors, dropped behind the convoy and was sunk with the loss of all hands by U-591. Not named on Bangor war memorial.
