Cofeb ryfel Talgarth

PWMP logoCofeb ryfel Talgarth

Mae’r gofeb hon yn coffáu pobl leol a fu farw yn y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf a’r Ail. Gweler isod i ddarganfod pwy oedden nhw.

Mae Talgarth wedi bod â thair cofeb ryfel. Yn fuan ar ôl y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf, gosodwyd plac coffa pres ar ddangos yn neuadd y dref. Trafodwyd cael cofeb newydd mewn cyfarfod ym mis Ionawr 1953 pan ddywedodd Mrs Charles Pugh mai cywilydd o beth oedd bod â chofeb ryfel mewn neuadd ddawns. Hefyd nid oedd lle ar y plac pres i gynnwys enwau’r dynion oedd wedi marw yn yr Ail Ryfel Byd.

Ym 1957, dadorchuddiwyd cofeb newydd yn y plot ar lan yr afon lle mae’r gofeb bresennol sy’n dyddio o’r 1980au i’w gweld. Erbyn hynny, roedd yr afon wedi erydu’r lan gan danseilio’r gofeb o’r 1950au.

Wrth aros cofeb newydd i gymryd lle’r hen un, darganfuwyd y plac pres gwreiddiol. Roedd wedi cael ei gladdu o dan y gofeb ryfel fel arwydd o barch. Aeth perchennog siop lleol â’r plac i’w garej i’w gadw’n ddiogel. Yn 2016 cafodd ei adnewyddu a’i ailosod yn neuadd y dref.

Bu farw tri o’r dynion a enwir ar y gofeb ryfel ar yr un diwrnod ym 1915 yn ardal Aden. Ar y diwrnod hwnnw, ymdeithiodd Bataliwn Sir Frycheiniog Cyffinwyr De Cymru 40km (25 milltir) ar draws y tywod i ymosod ar filwyr Twrcaidd. Adroddwyd bod 13 o ddynion o Sir Frycheiniog wedi marw y diwrnod hwnnw, sawl un ohonynt yn sgil lludded gwres.

Gallwch ddarllen mwy am feirwon lleol y Rhyfel Byd Cyntaf yn Talgarth’s War 1914-1919 gan Gymdeithas Hanesyddol Talgarth a’r Cylch. Mae’r llyfr ar gael gan y Ganolfan Groeso yn Nhalgarth.
