Le memorial de la guerre a Llansannan

On a érigé ce mémorial en 1922 afin de rendre hommage aux autochtones qui avaient mérité de la patrie pendant la Première Guerre Mondiale. On y trouve le nom des survivants aussi bien que celui des morts. Les noms pour la Seconde Guerre Mondiale ont été ajoutés ultérieurement.

L’inscription placée au-dessus des noms dit ceci : « Cyfodwyd y golofn hon er anrhydedd i fechgyn dewrion Llannsannan a wasanaethodd eu brenin a’u gwlad yn y Rhyfel Mawt 1914-1919. Mewn anghof ni chant fod ».

Ce qui se traduit par : «  cette colonne a été érigée en l’honneur des courageux jeunes gens de Llansannan, qui ont servi leur roi et leur patrie à la Grande Guerre 1914-1919. On ne les oubliera jamais ».

 L’un des hommes nommés sur ce mémorial est le Second Lieutenant George Orme Smart, mort après que son avion ait été descendu par le Baron von Richthofen, le célèbre « Baron Rouge ».

Worked in Llansannan Post Office before the war. Lived at Tŷ Canol, Nebo, and is also commemorated on Capel Garmon war memorial. His brother John Owen Davies also fell.
  • Private William John DAVIES 67561. Cheshire Regiment (15th Bn.) Died 13 Oct 1918 aged 19. Adopted son of Robert and Amelia Roberts, of Felin Cadeg, Llansannan. Buried at  Dadizeele New British Cemetery, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

  • Private John JONES 106120. King's Liverpool Regiment (53rd Graduated Bn. Depot). Died 26 Sep 1918 aged 17. Son of Edward and Jane Jones, Exchange, Llansannan. Bryn yr Orsedd Buried at Calvinistic Methodist Chapelyard, Llansannan.
  • Private Jonah JONES 53782. Cheshire Regiment (1st Bn.). Died 14 Nov 1918 aged 18. Son of Thomas and Leah Jones, Shop Bryn Rhyd yr Arian, Llansannan. Buried at Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany. Wounded on 10 August and taken prisoner of war. Worked at Shop yr Hand, Denbigh, before enlisting.

Son of Richard and Susannah Scales, of Newark on Trent, Notts; husband of Dorothy Ada Scales (nee Smart), of Farley Hill, Kersal, Manchester. Died at Fort Pitt Military Hospital, Kent. Buried at St. Paul's Churchyard, Kersal Moor.

Also commemorated at St. Paul's Churchyard, Kersal Moor.

Son of Horace William Potter and Elsie Constance Potter (nee Limb); husband of Margaret Joan Potter (nee Meeke), of Mirfield, Yorkshire. Buried at St. John's Crematorium, Woking, Surrey.
  • Private Roy Anthony Haigh POTTER 5829463. Cambridgeshire Regiment (2nd Bn.). Died 6 Jun 1943 aged 26. Born in Manchester. Died as a prisoner of war on the Burma Railway. Buried at Chungkai War Cemetery. Probably brother of HWH Potter, above.
