C’est Bill Henke, membre fondateur de la Merchant Navy Association (Wales) qui a été l’instigateur de ce mémorial, dans les années 1990. Le sculpteur Brian Fell s’est servi de métal rivé—selon la méthode utilisée dans la construction navale à l’époque de ces guerres—pour créer ce qui, au premier regard, semble être une section de la coque d’un navire. Sur le dessous, est représenté un visage humain que M Fell a décrit comme étant la «  tête de quelqu’un qui dort ».

La Marine marchande a joué un rôle primordial dans ces deux guerres où  tous les navires britanniques encouraient le risque d’être coulés par des mines ou des sous-marins  ennemis. Les navires de la Marine marchande  transportaient denrées alimentaires et équipement en Grande-Bretagne et des produits d’exportation pour payer ce ravitaillement. Ils emmenaient aussi des soldats et de l’approvisionnement aux champs de bataille et ramenaient les blessés en Grande-Bretagne. Deux marins de Cardiff sont morts quand le navire-hôpital Llandovery Castle a coulé au large de l’Irlande en 1918.

Parmi ceux dont on honore ici le souvenir, se trouvent deux jeunes frères originaires de Barry. Samuel Robert Bubbins avait 16 ans quand il est mort en mer au large de l’Espagne en 1917. Albert Bubbins est mort à l’âge de 15 ans quand son bateau a coulé au large du Dorset. Les frères Kenneth et Raymond Lewis, originaires de Cardiff, avaient respectivement 15 et 16 ans quand ils sont morts, le même jour de 1940, quand leur navire a coulé.

De nombreux autres jeunes gens de cette région ont été perdus en mer, pendant ces guerres. Neuf d’entre eux n’avaient que 14 ans quand ils sont morts.

Les frères McGillivray de Barry servaient sur des navires différents mais sont morts deux jours consécutifs de 1943. Trois des frères Prindle de Cardiff ont été tués en trois mois.
