First World War

The following men from the Harlech area died on active service in the First World War.

  • Bevers, Isaac Gwilym, Second Lieutenant. Died of wounds on 02/08/1917 aged 24. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Buried Dozinghem Military Cemetery. Son of Walter Bevers and schoolmistress Margaret Bevers, of Trum. Educated at Barmouth County School. Graduated with BSc from University College of North Wales, Bangor. Invalided home from Gallipoli in 1915. Went to the front in France in September 1916. Was engaged to Gracie Thomas of Bangor and mortally wounded one day before he was due to return home on leave for his wedding.
  • Davies, Douglas, Private 8/15936. Died 27/07/1918 aged 22. South Wales Borderers. Buried  at Karasouli Military Cemetery, Greece. Son of EJ and Lily Davies, of Tyn-y-Coed Gardens, Arthog, Dolgellau. Native of Brynerug, Tywyn.
  • Domney, William, Private 9840. Died 30/07/1916. Manchester Regiment. Thiepval Memorial. Husband of  I Domney, of Turnpike, Harlech. Not named on Harlech war memorial.
  • Evans, Evan, Corporal 39185. Died 19/09/1917 aged 24. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Buried Erquinghem Lys Churchyard. Son of Griffith and Mary Evans of Brwynllynau.
  • Hughes, William Jones, Private 532267. Died 14/04/1918 aged 27. Canadian Army Medical Corps. Buried Aubigny Communal Cemetery. Son of Mary Williams (formerly Hughes), of Tanrallt and the late Morris Hughes.
  • Humphreys, David William, Able Seaman J/15968. Killed in the Battle of Jutland on 31/05/1916 aged 20. Royal Navy, HMS Southampton. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Eldest son of stationmaster William Humphreys and Elizabeth Jane Humphreys, of Station House.
  • Jones, Edward, Private 12610. Died 11/11/1917. Somerset Light Infantry. Buried at Rethel French National Cemetery. Died while held by Germany as prisoner of war. Lived at Hendre, Harlech.

  • Lloyd, G Evan, Private 291538. Died 26/03/1917 aged 21. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Jerusalem Memorial. Son of John and Mary Lloyd, of Tynymaes, Llanfair, Harlech.
  • Lloyd, Willie, Private 61111. Died 23/04/1918 aged 19. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Buried Doullens Communal Cemetery. Son of Ellis and Ann Lloyd, of Bronygadair, Llanfair, Harlech. Not named on Harlech war memorial.
  • Owen, Ellis, Lance Serjeant 279. Died 10/08/1915 aged 25. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Helles Memorial. Son of Simon Owen, of Tryfer, Harlech. Killed by a shot to the head during the Gallipoli campaign, Turkey, a year to the day after he enlisted. Worked for John Jones of Morfa Bach before the war. Brother of Robert, below.
  • Owen, Robert Lewis, Rifleman R/921. Died 13/10/1915 aged 20. King's Royal Rifle Corps. Buried Rue-du-Bacquerot No.1 Cemetery. Son of Mr and Mrs Simon Owen of 7 Rock Terrace.
  • Owen, George, Private 3264. Died 03/09/1915 aged 23. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Helles Memorial. Son of W and M Owen, of Ffordd Groes; husband of Mary Owen, of Tŷ Llewelyn, Nevin.
  • Owen, Matthew, Lance Serjeant 502. Died 27/09/1915 aged 28. Welsh Guards. Loos Memorial. Son of John Owen, of Waterloo House. Was a golf professional in Tynemouth before enlisting. Married in August 1915, the month before his death.
  • Owen, William, Private 1506. Killed in action 25/01/1915 aged 26. Welsh Regiment. Le Touret Memorial. Son of Margaret Owen, of 1 Llechwedd Canol. Worked in coal mines before enlisting at the start of the war.
