In memory of Iolo Lewis

Photo of Iolo M LewisIolo M Lewis was the youngest son of Mr and Mrs Edward Lewis, of Tanycoed, Llanbedr. He had three brothers and a sister called Rosie.

He worshipped at Capel Beser, the village’s Wesleyan chapel. It’s recorded that when he was aged about 17 he donated five shillings to a Wesleyan fundraising appeal, and this was not his first contribution. He had a talent for recitation, and led concerts at the chapel as a young man.

Iolo joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers as a Private, and was promoted to Sergeant by the time he left for Egypt in late 1916. Earlier that year he had returned to Llanbedr on his honeymoon. His wife, Martha Louisa, lived in Kensal Rise, London.

Iolo died in Palestine on 26 March 1917. He was 27 years old. He is buried at Gaza War Cemetery.

He was the second of the siblings to die the space of less than a year. Rosie had died, aged 24, after a long illness in April 1916.
