In memory of Richard Trefor Jones

Photo of Richard Trefor Jones and wife EnaRichard Trefor Jones (known as Trefor) was born on 18 December 1902 in Aberystwyth, writes nephew David Jones. Trefor was the second son of Richard and Elizabeth Jane Jones. Richard senior was killed, aged 39, in 1916 while taking part in the Battle of Mametz Wood, in France.

Trefor lived all his life in Aberystwyth and worked for the Great Western Railway. On 16 October 1937 he married Florence Ena Humphreys (known as Ena). At that time, he was living in the family home at 41 Greenfield Street, Aberystwyth, and working as a carriage cleaner at Aberystwyth railway station. Trefor and Ena are shown in the photo on the left.

Ena was born on 30 March 1907 at Llanfyllin, Montgomeryshire. Her mother was Emily Ernestine Marsh. Her father, Evan Henry Humphreys, was also an employee of the Great Western Railway and was moved to Aberystwyth, where he eventually retired as Station Master. 

Trefor and Ena had one son. Trefor joined the army. He was classed B1 (fit for service) on 29 March 1943 and served as a Gunner with the Royal Artillery.

He was medically discharged from the army on 21 June 1944. He died, aged 42, at Aberystwyth General Hospital on 13 June 1945 of rheumatic heart disease. He was buried in Aberystwyth Cemetery. His last abode was 6 Fourth Avenue, Caeffynon, Aberystwyth, where he lived with his wife and six-year-old son. Caeffynon is an earlier name for Penparcau.
