In memory of William Francis David Williams

Portrait of William Francis David WilliamsWilliam Francis David Williams, known as Willie, was the only son of Evan and Mary Williams. Evan had died by 1917, when Mary was living in High Street, Talgarth, and working as a grocer at Westbrook House.

As a child, Willie attended the Congregational Church and Sunday school in Talgarth. He was a member of the local branch (known as the “Mynydd Troed tent”) of the Order of Rechabites, a friendly society based on temperance. Willie was a juvenile member before joining the adult “tent”.

He worked as a clerk at the United Counties Bank in Abergavenny. He was said to be quite shy and always cheerful and kind.

He joined the Bankers’ Battalion and was later transferred to the 22nd Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He went to France in October 1916. On 18 February 1917 he was taken to a casualty clearing station with severe chest wounds. He died the following day, aged 22. Private Williams is buried at Varennes Military Cemetery, in the Somme Region of France.
