Llanbradach war memorial

This war memorial commemorates local people who died in the First and Second World Wars. To discover who they were, see below.

First World War

Second World War

The memorial features a female statue holding a sword with one hand and pointing upwards with the other hand.

All Saints Church lost two of its bell ringers in the First World War: Charles Mountstephen and Fred Hurford. On 2 February 1918 a full peal of 5,040 changes, Grandsire Triples, was rung with the bells half-muffled as a tribute to the parish's war dead. The peal lasted for three hours and 7 minutes.

Brass plaques inside All Saints Church, which was demolished in 1994, commemorated two brothers who died in the First World War: David Stanley James and Thomas Treharne James. The church also contained a lectern given in memory of Captain WH Nicholls by his widow, Lilian May Nicholls.

Two Llanbradach men, Raymond Bassett Evans and Howard Skym, lost their lives in 1941 when the cargo ship on which they both worked, Swansea-registered SS Henri Mory, was sunk by a German submarine off Ireland.

With thanks to Byron Jones, Alan Regin and Dennis Sellwood, and to the Central Council of Church Bell Ringers
