Llandudno Junction war memorial, Penrhos Avenue

Llandudno Junction war memorial, Penrhos Avenue

The town’s war memorial takes the form of this war memorial hall. The names of the war dead are written on a wooden board inside the building. After the Second World War, a large plaque was cast to display the names of the fallen from both wars on the hall’s façade. To read their details, choose a category below.

Plans for the hall were drawn up in 1924. It took a further three years for funds to be raised by public subscription and through a series of fundraising events such as the annual Rose Queen pageant and eisteddfodau.

In 1927, construction began and local MP David Lloyd George, who had been Prime Minister during the First World War, laid the foundation stone. He was presented with a silver trowel by Llandudno Junction’s Rose Queen for 1927, Olga Hughes. The hall was designed by local architect Mr B de Helsby. It was opened to the public on Good Friday, April 6, 1928 by Thomas ap Rhys. Mr ap Rhys was a veteran of the war who had lost his sight in fighting in France.
