Llandudno Junction war memorial, Penrhos Avenue

Llandudno Junction war memorial, Penrhos Avenue

The town’s war memorial takes the form of this war memorial hall. The hall’s frontage, including the curved extensions on each side, was built of bricks from Flanders, Belgium, where many British soldiers had died in the First World War. Local families bought a brick each to raise funds for the hall. Some of the land was donated by businessman JH Stott.

Photo of silver trowel presented to William J WilliamsThe names of the war dead are written on a wooden board inside the building. After the Second World War, a large plaque was cast to display the names of the fallen from both wars on the hall’s façade. To read their details, choose a category below.

Plans for the hall were drawn up in 1924. It took a further three years for funds to be raised by public subscription and through a series of fundraising events such as the annual Rose Queen pageant and eisteddfodau.

In 1927, construction began and local MP David Lloyd George, who had been Prime Minister during the First World War, laid the foundation stone. He was presented with a silver trowel by Llandudno Junction’s Rose Queen for 1927, Olga Hughes.

Local magistrate William J Williams also received an inscribed silver trowel (pictured here) commemorating his part in the foundation-stone laying. He was born to Welsh parents in Manchester in 1863 and worked for Kodak. He was a keen mountaineer and married Mary Williams, one of few female Alpine climbers of the time. They moved to Llandudno Junction in 1921. He was later treasurer of Coleg Harlech, to which he donated his large book collection.

The hall was designed by local architect Mr B de Helsby. It was opened to the public on Good Friday, April 6, 1928 by Thomas ap Rhys. Mr ap Rhys was a veteran of the war who had lost his sight in fighting in France.
