The following men from the area died in service with the Royal Navy in the Second World War.

  • Henry Vernon Allen, Able Seaman D/JX184691. Died 07/05/1945. Aged 20. HMS Exeter. Buried at Ambon War Cemetery. Son of Isaac and Margaret Ann Allen, of Hightown, Wrexham.
  • Herbert James Caldwell, Lieut-Commander. Died 22/04/1940. Aged 33. HM Submarine Tarpon. Comemmorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial.Son of James Oswald and Jane Caldwell; husband of Alice Violet Caldwell, of Oxford. His submarine was sunk near Denmark.

  • William Davies, Petty Officer D/JX 136620. Died 25/02/1944. Aged 28. HMS Mahratta. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of William Henry and Nellie Davies, of Wrexham. His ship, a destroyer, was escorting a convoy near Norway when sunk by a U-boat.
  • Douglas Downward, Leading Cook D/MX106315. Died 19/03/1945. Aged 21. Buried at Moascar War Cemetery. Son of Samuel and Sarah Ann Downward, of Wrexham.
  • Thomas Gilbert Edwards, Ordinary Seaman P/JX 259705. Died 19/12/1941. Aged 25. HMS Neptune. Comemmorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of Evan and Emma Edwards, of Wrexham. He was one of 764 who drowned after HMS Neptune hit a mine near Tripoli while trying to prevent German and Italian supplies reaching North Africa. Only one crew member survived, after five days in the sea.

  • Leonard Evans, Able Seaman D/SSX 21947. Died 10/04/1940. Aged 20. HMS Hunter Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Edward William and Mary Ellen Evans, of Wrexham. His ship sank in a Norwegian fjiord after helping to sink two German destroyers.
  • Walter Haines, Boy 1st Class D/JX 170994. Died 19/12/1941. Aged 17. HMS Neptune. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Thomas and Agnes Ann Haines, of Wrexham. One of 764 who drowned after HMS Neptune hit a mine near Tripoli while trying to prevent German and Italian supplies reaching North Africa. Only one crew member survived, after five days in the sea.
  • Arthur Hughes, Leading Supply Assistant D/MX 65718. Died 09/04/1942. Aged 30. HMS Hermes. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of John and Mary A Hughes, of Wrexham. His ship, the Royal Navy’s first purpose-built aircraft carrier, was sunk by bombs from Japanese aircraft near Sri Lanka.
  • Emlyn Hughes, Leading Cook (S) D/MX 52620. Died 10/01/1941. Aged 25. HMS Illustrious. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Thomas and Jane Hughes, of Wrexham. He died when his ship, an aircraft carrier, was badly damaged by German dive-bombers while in the Mediterranean.
  • Albert Edward Jones, Supply Assistant P/MX 65992. Died 26/07/1940. Aged 24. HMS Boreas. Buried at Dover (St James’s) Cemetery. Son of Edward and Sarah Elizabeth Jones, of Garden Village, Wrexham. Killed when his ship was attacked by the Luftwaffe near Dover.
  • John Wesley Jones, Petty Officer P/JX 133486. Died 24/05/1941. HMS Hood. Comemmorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial. He was one of 1,415 men who died when HMS Hood was sunk by the German battleship Bismarck. This was the Royal Navy’s biggest loss of life on a single ship.
  • Raymond George Kent, Stoker 1st Class D/KX 120060. Died 10/12/1941. Aged 20. HMS Repulse. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Daniel H and Beatrice M Kent, of Rhosnesni. His ship was sunk by Japanese aircraft near Malaysia.

  • Kenneth Victor Lloyd, Engine Room Artificer 4th Class, C/MX 76755. Died 17/12/1942. Aged 36. HMS Firedrake. Chatham Naval Memorial.Son of John Edward and Mary Handley Lloyd. His ship, a destroyer, was sunk by a U-boat while escorting a convoy of 43 ships to Canada.
  • William Cyrus Mansley, Able Seaman D/SX 226995. Died 15/06/1944. Aged 36. HMS Blackwood. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Enoch and Edith Mansley, of Wrexham. His frigate was damaged by a U-boat while protecting ships involved in the D-Day landings. The ship later sank near Dorset.
  • Harold Edgar Markey, Joiner 2nd Class P/MX 51063. Died 24/05/1941. Aged 34. HMS Hood. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Husband of Jessie Markey, of Rhostyllen. He was one of 1,415 men who died when HMS Hood was sunk by the German battleship Bismarck. This was the Royal Navy’s biggest loss of life on a single ship.
  • Reginald Edward Arthur Morton, Petty Officer Sick Berth, C/MX 51182. Died 01/02/1943. HMS Welshman. Chatham Naval Memorial. His ship helped keep Malta supplied during the two-year siege by the Axis powers. It was sunk by a U-boat near Libya.
  • Glyn Desmond Roberts, Sub-Lieutenant (A), Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died 10/08/1945. HMS Indefatigable. Awarded Distinguished Service Cross and Bar. Lee-on-Solent Memorial.
  • William Charles Williams, Assistant Steward C/LX 24415. Died 10/12/1941. Aged 24. HMS Prince of Wales. Comemmorated at Chatham Naval Memorial. Son of Charles and Jane Williams, of Wrexham. His ship was sunk by Japanese aircraft near Malaysia.
  • Edward Henry Woodward, Leading Stoker D/KX 120115. Died 15/06/1944. HMS Mourne. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of George and Blodwen Woodward, of Wrexham. He was missing, presumed dead, after his ship was sunk by a U-boat in the English Channel.
  • John Howell Wynne, Stoker 1st Class P/KX 101421. Died 15/11/1942. HMS Avenger. Comemmorated at Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of John Wynne, and of Alice Wynne, of Southsea. His ship, an escort carrier, was sunk by a U-boat south of Portugal.
  • Thomas Wynne, Stoker 1st Class D/KX 126825. Died 12/12/1943. Aged 22. HMS Tynedale. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Richard and Martha Alice Wynne, of Huntroyde, Wrexham. His escort destroyer was sunk by a U-boat off Algeria.
  • Donald Yeo, Ordinary Seaman C/JX 176900. Died 02/12/1940. Aged 21. HMS Forfar. Comemmorated at Chatham Naval Memorial. Son of Henry Spencer Yeo and Eva Yeo, of Wrexham. His ship was originally a Canadian Pacific passenger liner, converted to an armed merchant cruiser in 1939. It was sunk by a U-boat west of Ireland.
