Avoidable sea tragedy in Pembs

Freshwater West is one of Wales' most beautiful beaches, but in spring 1943 it was littered with the bodies of soldiers and sailors ...

whose three boats had been destroyed by a storm. Two of the boats were being moved by the Royal Navy and Royal Marines from Belfast to Falmouth, ready for the D-Day landings. They were shallow landing craft, not designed for heavy seas, but they were denied shelter at Fishguard as the storm worsened. A ship's lifeboat which went to their aid was also lost. All 85 men involved were killed including Marine Delwyn Davies, who drowned not far from his Kidwelly home.
