Vicar's tithe-ing troubles in 1887

When the vicar of Llandrillo-yn-Rhos, near Colwyn Bay, rejected farmers' demands for relief from tithes (church taxes), one of his churches was burnt down, troops ...

were called in to quell a riot and there were even threats to blow up the vicarage. To read his story, scan our QR codes at the entrances to the parish churchyard, or click here. His grave is part of our new mini tour of the churchyard. When the "tithes wars" had died down, vicar Venables Williams looked forward to his parish being boosted by this new church in the booming young resort of Colwyn Bay - only for Colwyn Bay to be split off as a separate parish.
