A goldsmith's hallmark in Llanrwst


Even today it's commonly assumed that Llanrwst's almshouses were built by the major local ...
landowner in 1610, Sir John Wynn. But later that century Britain's attorney general ruled that the charitable homes were funded by John Williams, who was goldsmith to King James I and so loaded with cash that he even lent some of it to Sir John. People lived in the almshouses until the 1970s, and among the last residents was a man who thought he was Winston Churchill.
