Stories of park's memorials revealed

Alexandra Gardens in Cardiff has a concentration of memorials, and now HistoryPoints QR codes enable visitors to read the stories behind them. The information ...

is linked to form a self-guided circuit around the gardens. Subjects are varied, and include the thalidomide drug scandal, organ and tissue donors, the Welsh National War Memorial and a Swedish diplomat who helped to save thousands of Jews in Nazi-occupied Hungary. Our thanks to Cardiff Bereavement Services for putting up some of the QR-code plaques.

Cardiff resident Rosaleen Moriarty-Simmonds OBE, who is thalidomide-impaired, said: “It’s wonderful that we now have little QR-code plaques at the Thalidomide Memorial. The reason for creating the memorial was to ensure that the story of thalidomide would never be forgotten, and for this we need to pass the story on to younger generations. We hope that many of the students who visit Alexandra Gardens, among others, will take a moment to scan the QR codes and read the concise information about the memorial.”
