Miners' medics before the NHS
As healthcare professionals continue to work flat out to protect us from coronavirus, new QR codes at the site of the Miners' Hospital in Caerphilly are a reminder of how workers or communities organised their own medical ...
provision before the NHS was formed. The hospital was funded by colliery workers and opened in 1923. It was reserved for miners until the Second World War, when victims of Luftwaffe bombing raids were among the non-miners admitted. It was absorbed into the NHS in 1948 and closed a few years after scenes for Dr Who were filmed there.
