provision before the NHS was formed. The hospital was funded by colliery workers and opened in 1923. It was reserved for miners until the Second World War, when victims of Luftwaffe bombing raids were among the non-miners admitted. It was absorbed into the NHS in 1948 and closed a few years after scenes for Dr Who were filmed there.
