10 years of instant history

Shortly before the 2012 Easter holidays, HistoryPoints put its first set of QR codes on display in Conwy, Deganwy and Llandudno Junction so that anyone could use emerging smartphone technology to receive ...

a concise history of each featured object or place on the spot. Ten years later, we've produced QR codes for over 2,000 places right across Wales, thanks to the input of many contributors, support from local authorities and other property owners and donations from sponsoring businesses. The first set of QR codes and associated web pages was a template for what followed. As well as featuring notable buildings and structures, we provided details of the local war dead at Conwy cenotaph, where no names have ever been displayed. The 'We Are Seven' inscription on a churchyard grave no longer mystified visitors. Great paintings of Conwy before Telford built his suspension bridge could be viewed where they were painted. A portrait and potted biography of Harold Lowe, hero of the Titanic disaster, became available to anyone passing his former house. And the meanings of place-names such as Pen Llithrig y Wrach were explained - alongside audio readings of their pronunciation.
