Dreaded drought on the Dee

The dry summer of 1868 damaged industrial production in North Wales, including at the Pentrefelin slate slab works, near Llangollen. There wasn't enough water in the river Dee to power the various mills in the area which still ...

used waterwheels, well into the steam age. The slate works also continued to use water transport after sidings for steam trains were laid alongside - one worker was accidentally killed outside the works in 1877 while loading a slab onto a canal boat. The works building is now the Llangollen Motor Museum.
