its origins. Slate was quarried there by the 13th century, and archaeologists have matched slates found at a Roman fort to the vicinity of Cilgwyn. Much later, Cilgwyn was the first quarry in the area to use electricity and was unusual in allowing the quarrymen to choose the quarry doctor.
