this was the first comprehensive school in Wales - and probably the first purpose-built one in Britain. Anglesey council was dissatisfied in the 1930s with children's futures being determined by whether they passed the "11 Plus" test at the end of primary school. War interrupted its plans for schools where all children would receive secondary education together, but the Amlwch school's foundation stone was laid in 1948 and the first pupils arrived in 1950.
