Swansea workhouse centenarians
Life was notoriously hard in workhouses, yet some of the 'inmates' at Swansea workhouse lived to great ages - at least three to 100 years or more. Many residents were at the other end of the scale: children who'd been ...
deserted by, or had lost, parents. Three sibilings there became orphans in 1919 with the death of their mother; she had done toxic munitions work during the First World War, in which their father was killed in action. The large workhouse complex later became an NHS hospital and is now housing.
