Jumping bail in Monmouth

Kate Gardiner's marriage went downhill fast in 1903, on the day her husband Domenico entered her room while a soldier hid beneath her bed. Domenico was landlord of the Market Tavern in Monmouth, and later that day ...

he was seen emerging from the dining room holding the knife he used to wound Kate. Her brother provided a £50 surety so that Domenico was released on bail until his trial. Domenico absconded, leaving his brother-in-law facing the large surety bill. The building has been offices for decades and is now owned by Leedam Natural Burial Grounds.
