Harping on in Caerphilly

Caerphilly's Victorian renown as the "home of harps" reflected the work of a Yorkshire farm labourer's son, as you can discover by scanning the new HistoryPoints QR codes near Clwb y Ddraig in Park Lane. Richard Barker was the first headmaster ...

of the National School which opened in Park Lane in the 1860s. He taught many children to play the harp, and his pupils won many prizes in national and international competitions. His own sons, Walter and Fred, both won the National Eisteddfod harp prize when just 12 years old and had distinguished careers in music. Walter's harp is exihibited at the museum of the University of Melbourne, where Walter was the first harp teacher.
