The memorial was unveiled in January 1925.

Many of those named on the memorial died in Britain’s ill-fated attempt to invade Turkey through the Gallipoli peninsula in 1915. The Allies buried most of their casualties at sea, because they had failed to capture enough ground to bury them all. At least 13 Newtown men are commemorated on the Helles Memorial at Gallipoli, which lists almost 21,000 casualties who had no grave. Several others from Newtown were buried in cemeteries there.

Many Newtown men who survived Gallipoli moved to Egypt. At least 10 died in combat in the Jerusalem and Gaza areas.

Also named on the memorial is Hilda Jessie Downing, who worked as a nurse and died of influenza shortly before the end of the First World War.

Talented pianist Pedro Phillips was killed by a shell while working as a stretcher bearer on the Western Front in Belgium in 1917. His brother Thomas also joined the army, and died of a brain abscess in 1918.

During the Second World War, Amelia Rowlands, who lived in Canal Road, lost her husband John and her only son Clive.

Died when he was accidentally shot in an exercise on Salisbury Plain.

Born in Birkenhead. Son of John and Elizabeth Sigley; husband of Doris Sigley, of Tranmere, Birkenhead. His last address was 1 Cross Street, Newtown. His ship sank, with the loss of 56 lives, after German submarine U-69 had fired 102 high explosive rounds and 34 incendiary rounds from the deck gun, 220 rounds from the 20mm gun and 400 rounds with its MG34. Not named on Newtown war memorial.
