The following men from the Conwy area died in active service:

  • Alfred William Hughes, Leading Aircraftman, 1178083, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 24/05/1942. Buried at Newmarket cemetery, Suffolk. Son of Alfred W Hughes and Louise Hughes of Llandudno Junction, husband of Helen Hughes of Llandudno Junction.
  • David John Hughes, Shipwright 4th Class, D/MX510247, Royal Navy (HMS Drake). Died at a Naval hospital on 09/02/1944. Buried at St Agnes Churchyard, Conwy. Son of Richard and Ruth Morris Hughes, of 17 Lower Gate Street, Conwy.
  • Robert Emrys Hughes, Flying Officer 53446. Died 17/03/1945 aged 33. Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Buried Durnbach War Cemetery. Son of John and E Hughes.
  • Elias Gwynedd Hughes, Fusilier 4209236. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Died 10/11/1944 aged 23. Buried Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery. Son of Evan and Ellen Hughes of 7, Park Terrace, Deganwy; husband of Joyce Marion Hughes of Shirley, Birmingham.

  • Harold Frederick Hughes, Leading Aircraftman, 1107672, RAF Volunteer Reserve, 654 Squadron. Died 07/09/1943. Buried at Catania war cemetery, Sicily, Italy. Son of Hugh Thomas Hughes and Fannie Hughes of Deganwy.
  • Hugh Frederick Hughes, Gunner, 1123342, Royal Artillery, 148 (The Bedfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment. Died 29/03/1943 aged 22. Buried at Kanchanaburi war cemetery, Thailand. Son of Richard and Jane Ellen Hughes of Conwy. Lived at 25 Bryn Tirion Park, Gyffin. He died of malaria and beri-beri at Tonchan camp while being forced to take part in building the Burma-Thailand railway, which was nicknamed “Death Railway”.
  • Hugh Joseph Hughes, Able Seaman D/JX 150645. Died 09/03/1942 aged 21. Royal Navy - HMS Scout. Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of John and Hannah Hughes.
  • Robert S Hughes, Sergeant, 1127136, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 03/08/1942. Commemorated on Alamein memorial, Egypt. Son of Robert Maurice and Catherine Jane Hughes of Llandudno Junction.

  • Thomas Charles Hughes, Trooper 3970029. Died 24/07/1945 aged 30. Royal Armoured Corps 11th Hussars. Buried Rome War Cemetery. Son of Hugh and Margaret Hughes, husband of Mary Josephine Hughes, of Gyffin, Conwy.
  • Thomas David Hughes, Sergeant, 7881710, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Died 20/11/1942. Buried at Dely Ibrahim war cemetery, Algeria. Son of David and Sarah Ellen Hughes, husband of Elizabeth Hughes of Conwy.
  • Iorwerth Brian Evan Humphrey, Lieutenant, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died 14/06/1944 while in charge of HM Trawler Birdlip, built in Beverley in 1941 as an anti-submarine trawler. It was one of several ships attacked near Greenville, Liberia (west Africa), by a U-boat on 14 June 1944, when it sank. Commemorated on Lowestoft Naval Memorial, Suffolk. Lived at ‘La Casita’, St George’s Drive, Deganwy.

  • Andrew Norman Vernon Jones, Lieutenant, 330239, Grenadier Guards 2nd Battalion. Died 10/04/1945. Buried at Rheinberg war cemetery, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. Son of G Norman and Kathleen M Jones of Deganwy.

  • Charles Conway Jones, Guardsman 2738921, Welsh Guards. Died 27/05/1944 aged 19. Buried at Cassino, Italy. Son of Robert Charles and Elizabeth Ann Jones, of 23 Penmaen Road, Conwy. Brother of Glyn and Robert Owen, below.
  • Donald Hevey Jones, Sergeant 4191110, Royal Welch Fusiliers, attached to Royal West African Frontier Force. Died 03/05/1944 aged 29. Buried at Christiansborg War Cemetery, Ghana. Son of George Walter and Emily Eliza Jones, of Lyndhurst, Cadnant Park, Conwy; husband of Anne Mayville Jones, of Grantham, Lincolnshire. Emily collapsed and died soon after receiving news of her son’s death, and was buried on 20/05/1944.

Awarded Military Medal in recognition of exemplary gallantry during active operations against the enemy on land. Buried at St Agnes Churchyard, Conwy. Son of John Thomas Jones and Susannah Jones of 22 Rose Hill Street, Conwy; husband of Ellen Jones of Conwy. Brother of Lance Corporal JA Jones, who died soon after the First World War.
  • Edward Lloyd Jones, Senior Ordinary Seaman, Merchant Navy. Died 07/11/1942 when cargo ship SS Roxby was torpedoed by U-boat in North Atlantic while carrying coal from Cardiff to Halifax, Canada. Commemorated at Tower Hill memorial, London.
  • Emlyn Jones, Ordinary Signalman, D/JX 162885, Royal Navy. Died 04/03/1942 when HMS Anking was sunk by Japanese warships off Java. Commorated on Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Richard and Ellin Jones of Conwy.
  • Glyn Jones, Sergeant, 4195412, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, 13th Battalion. Killed at a firing range in Northern Ireland on 06/03/1945 aged 27. Buried in St Agnes Churchyard, Conwy. Son of Robert Charles and Elizabeth Ann Jones, of 23 Penmaen Road, Conwy; husband of Lavinia Joyce Jones of Arundel, Sussex.
  • Gwilym Jones, 1796118, Gunner, Royal Artillery. Died 16/07/1945. Buried at Labuan, Malaysia. Son of Annie Jones of Llandudno Junction.
  • Harold Jones, Able Seaman, Merchant Navy. Died 17/03/1942 when steam tanker MV Athelqueen (8,800 tons) was sunk by an Italian submarine. Commemorated at Tower Hill memorial. Son of William and Mary E Jones of Conwy.
  • Hedd Wynn Jones, 4194726, Sergeant, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Died 11/10/1944. Buried at Llangwstenin cemetery, near Mochdre. Son of William David and Elizabeth Wynn Jones, of Llandudno Junction. Lived at 7 Stanley Oak Road, Llandudno Junction.

  • Isaac Roger Jones, Stoker First Class, P/K 56445, Royal Navy. Died 11/06/1944, aged 43, when HMS Halsted was torpedoed by a German E-boat (motor torpedo boat). Buried at Haslar Royal Naval Cemetery, Hampshire. Son of John and Mary Jones of 5 Watkin Street, Conwy; husband of Elizabeth Jones of Llansanffraid Glan Conwy.

  • Robert Owen Jones, Bombardier 1073767. Died in prisoner of war camp on 15/05/1944 aged 36. Royal Artillery 6 Bty., 2 HAA Regt. Krakow Rakowicki Cemetery. Son of Robert Charles and Elizabeth Ann Jones, of 23 Penmaen Road, Conwy.

  • William George Jones, Private, 4194244, The King's Regiment (Liverpool) 13th Battalion. Died 23/06/1944. Karachi war cemetery, Pakistan. Son of Hugh Watkin Jones and Elizabeth Ann Jones of 8 Waen Terrace, Conwy.
  • Douglas Morris Kennedy, Warrant Officer Class II, 902067, Royal Artillery, 69 (The Denbighshire Yeomanry) Medium Regiment. Died 15/04/1943, aged 23. Tripoli war cemetery, Libya. Son of Thomas Alfred Kennedy and Lucy Kennedy (nee Morris) of St George’s Drive, Deganwy. Former member of 1st Conway Scout Group. Worked at Barclays Bank before enlisting, and was in the Territorial Army. Returned from Dunkirk in 1940 after escaping from the Wormhout ambush which resulted in a massacre of Welsh soldiers.
