Llandudno war memorial

This memorial takes the form of a tall obelisk, on the landward side of the promenade. It is positioned on the axis created by Gloddaeth Street, the wide road running from the west to north shores. Anyone looking northwards along the street can see the memorial in the distance.

Aerial photo of Llandudno war memorial and prom in 1941The memorial was designed by architect Sidney Colwyn Foulkes, who was based in Colwyn Bay and designed many of the area’s finest buildings of the early 20th century. The memorial was creaphoto_of_london_welsh_at _llandudnoted in 1922, to commemorate the local people who died in the First World War. The names of people who died in the Second World War were added later.

The aerial photo, courtesy of the Welsh Government, shows the war memorial in 1941. The T-shaped structure just beyond it is a concrete air-raid shelter.

The other photo shows this area of Llandudno in 1915, before the war memorial was erected, with the 15th (1st London Welsh) Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers on parade.
