Glyn Roberts (d.1962)
Glyn Roberts was born in Bangor in August 1904 and educated at Friars School. He graduated in history at Bangor and took up a university teaching post in Swansea.
During the Second World War he worked for the government, helping to source materials for the war effort. He was dispatched to the USA as deputy to the secretary of the British Raw Materials Mission. He was also deputy executive secretary of the Combined Raw Material Board, which coordinated supplies of materials in the UK, USA and in other United Nations member states.
After the war, Glyn returned to academic circles. His administrative skills proved invaluable at Bangor. As registrar from October 1945 to October 1948, he organised many changes to prepare the university for the post-war era.
In 1948 he took the university’s chair of Welsh history. His specialisms included Tudor Wales, the upheaval of King Edward I’s conquest of Wales in the 13th century, parliamentary representation and local government.
He married Mary Davida Alwynne Hughes of Penclawdd, near Swansea, in 1933. After her death in 1953, he married her younger sister Carys in 1954. He died in Menai Bridge in August 1962. Carys died in 1987. All three are buried here.
